History

The thalassemia research center started its studies on thalassemia in 1990. the center received its approve of establishment on January 28, 2006 and managed to obtain its establishment permit on September 10, 2008.

This center consists of two separate buildings:1. Clinical research department located in Boo Ali Sina Hospital, Sari. 2. Molecular research department located in Shahid Ghasemi alley, Imam Reza Blvd., Sari

Mission

Conducting basic and applied researches in diagnosing, preventing from and treating thalassemia major

 

Goals

• Quantitative and qualitative development of articles in the field of hemoglobinopathy and thalassemia
• Quantitative and qualitative development of research projects in the field of hemoglobinopathy and thalassemia
• Development of the center's research infrastructure
• Development of thalassemia registry program (MTR)
• Quantitative and qualitative development of product-oriented and technological studies
• Development of research relationships at national and international level

 

Priority Research

Non-invasive prenatal diagnosis for thalassemia major

• Secondary and tertiary studies in the field of prevention, diagnosis and treatment of thalassemia
• Medications that increase hemoglobin F
• iron chelating medications
• Treatments for the complications of thalassemia major( cardiac /endocrine disorders )  
• molecular and cell research on new methods of diagnosis and prevention of new cases
• Genetic polymorphisms in hematological malignancy and thalassemia patients
• Infertility in thalassemia patients
• Improving the health and quality of life of thalassemia patients
