Today education along with the use of information technology and communication in higher education in general, and medical education in particular, faces important challenges. Changes in health care systems and the advances in Medicine, together they increase the level of the services of the faculty members in different fields and as a result it leads in the reduction of time in education. The importance of developing information technology and communication is so much that after the first decade of 21st century, there are a few education and research activities that are possible without internet and computer communication. If education had only been possible by teachers and trainers and books had been considered as the main source of education in the past, today the new communicative instruments and environments would be used for education. Internet, multimedia, communicative technologies have projected tools and new methods for developers, planners, managers and representatives.

 

 

 

Virtual University of Medical Sciences(VUMS) established in 2016 in alliance with the policies of the vice-chancellor for educational affairs of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education Set its sights on providing and improving e-learning infrastructure in Iranian universities of medical sciences.

 

  • VUMS has two principal missions 

1- Executing and extending special virtual programs such as e-learning in medical sciences and e-health, etc.

2- Facilitating the establishment of e-learning systems in universities of medical sciences by developing fundamental infrastructure and standard e-contents.

 

  • VUMS activities

 

  VUMS has developed a variety of virtual programs and workshops for the purpose of delivering them to learners all over the country. The most significant of these activities could be mentioned as follows:

 

1- Developing hundreds of hours of e-contents compatible with international standards in the form of various educational tools, such as podcasts, PPT slides together with lectures, animations, simulations, multimedia, etc.

2- Devising several virtual courses and programs for the public, students, and graduates (cme).

3- Providing both synchronous (virtual classes, webinars, and online workshops) and asynchronous (LMS-based) e-learning programs.

4- Delivering a virtual master's degree of “Medical Education” for faculty members of medical sciences universities (More than 1500 faculty members have enrolled in this program).

5- Instructional designing and delivering a virtual residency program of “Family Medicine” in collaboration with the vice-chancellor of health.

6- Equipping VUMS with a modern datacenter powered by more than 250 virtual machines, up-to-date storage systems with high capacity, and broadband Internet connections.

7- Developing a user-friendly Learning Management System (LMS) called “NAVID”. This enterprise system is being used by almost all universities of medical sciences in the country.
