Abadan School of Medical Sciences was founded by Ministry of Health and Medical Education in September 1941 as a Nursing Faculty and in 2012 it became an independent faculty of medical school. Program study of this school is similar to curriculum that applies most Iranian medical faculties.

Abadan city is located in Khuzestan Province, central west of Iran. It lies on Abadan Island (68 km long, 3–19 km wide) which is bounded in the west by the Arvand waterway and to the east by the Bahmanshir outlet of the Karun River (the Shatt al-Arab), 53 kilometers from the Persian Gulf, near the Iraqi-Iran border.

 

 

Studying at this Medical Faculty required high intellectual abilities and good moral qualities.  Our aim is providing an education which will prepare future doctors, nurses, or other kinds of related experts both professionally and morally to devote their energy and effort to helping the sick and achieving advances in the medical sciences. Medical and nursing schools are the major schools of Abadan medical university. Basic sciences and pathophysiology district is two main district of medical school.

 

Basic sciences district is composed of various parts included; chemistrybiochemistry, molecular biology lab, anatomy hall, hematology lab, microbiology lab, parasitology lab, histopathology lab, immunology lab, and medical physiology lab.

 

 

The Anatomy hall is the oldest and largest basic sciences part in Abadan school of Medical Sciences, established in 1992. The department involves three different major divisions of histology, embryology, and anatomy. The department provides educational facilities such as dissection halls, hall of anatomic models, histology laboratories and laboratories for undergraduate students (Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, Hygiene, etc.). Academic members of this part are among the most knowledgeable and publish articles in the fields of anatomy, embryology and histology. They are experienced in their specialized research fields. They teach students with different methods such as educational clip shows, anatomy models, educational corpse studies, and surface anatomy and radiology.

 

 

Chemistry, Biochemistry, and molecular biology lab

Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry is one of the oldest basic science parts of the Abadan school of Medical Sciences, established in 1995. The department provides educational facilities such as Biochemistry, chemistry, and molecular laboratories for undergraduate students.

 

 

 

 

Parasitology and Mycology laboratory

The Department of Parasitology and Mycology due to its broad focus and diversity of experimental approaches, parasitology occupies a unique position among the other disciplines studied at the Faculty of Medical Science. It is characterized by complex and interdisciplinary approaches to the studied issues. In parasitology, classical zoology and ecology meet sophisticated technologies of molecular biology and biochemistry, and similar synergistic combinations of two or more approaches can frequently be observed in parasitology research.

 

Taken together, parasitology in general and our departmental research in particular can bring important knowledge to human and veterinary medicine. Using the most up-to-date knowledge of molecular biology we are able to enter deeply into the enigmatic world of molecules that stay behind the parasite-host interactions. Those, who prefer field work, may be interested in our field activities in the Islamic Republic of Iran or abroad. It is apparent from the above that the Department provides studies in several basic areas of parasitology. Anyone who is interested in molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, immunology, cell biology, taxonomy, morphology, ecology or evolution may find an opportunity to study at our Department. Microbiology laboratory

The Department of Microbiology at Abadan Medical School is dedicated to providing the quality education, through both teaching and research, necessary to meet the needs of this growing field. Our faculty members aggressively pursue research in many areas of the science: immunology; virology; microbial ecology and pathology; microbial genetics; and others.  Research projects are continuously conducted through collaboration with and support from various prominent sources. Undergraduate students gain valuable experience in the lab by working under one of the professors; faculty often publishing numerous articles on their collaborative experimentation and study.  Focus may be on such notable areas as herpes virus, on studying the impact of viruses on marine and freshwater food webs, or on sequencing genes in pathogenic fungi.

Faculty of nursing

The faculty of Nursing offers four-year Bachelor programs. It trains graduates to provide health care services in primary, secondary and tertiary prevention and care, to offer nursing care in illness, rehabilitation and after-treatment. Graduates are able to offer nursing care to individuals, families, groups and communities in various states of health and illness, and thus to contribute to the maintenance or restoration of health or to a peaceful and dignified death. The professional training of students is based on the scientific and research-based knowledge.

 

The nursing faculty focuses on the development of nursing and on issues of nursing practice both from a theoretical and practical standpoint. staorganizes international nursing symposia, professional seminars and courses in life-long learning (the certified Mentor courses, Pediatric Nursing courses, General Nursing courses). Foreign cooperation is carried out as part of bilateral contracts and Socrates/Erasmus mobility agreements. The department's staff participates in several international and research projects. The clinical nursing placement is fully provided by mentors who are graduates of a certified mentor course.

Simulation Hall

Our students in faculty of nursing are educated in a scheduled course in hospitals according to the determined ethics. But also, we have a well-equipped simulation hall. Simulation is a potent and highly interactive educational strategy for students from medical education experts view. In recent years, it has been recognized as an important and fundamental teaching method in education of medical sciences students. The advancement of technology causes simulations development used for improving learning experiences. The most students appreciate this centered.

Clinical skills practice simulators: in this center with educational models, students can improve clinical skills such as obtaining intravenous access, drawing blood sample, performing physical examination and other activities.

 

Virtual human patients for clinical education:

in this center, using reactive human simulators, students can practice taking blood pressure, doing electrocardiography, managing artificial airway and many other invasive or noninvasive procedures.

 

Screen based/PC based simulators: in this virtual environment using with software programs,

 

students may practice some important skills such as clinical decision making, judgment, and reasoning in approaching with patients that need to cardiopulmonary resuscitation or manage multiple traumas.  

 

Library of Abadan School of Medical Sciences includes many resources in different fields of science. The holdings of the library include 23.765 books in English and Persian languages. These collections include 3919 titles in Persian and 1878 titles is Latin. On a regular day, it serves all students and professors of the faculty and staff.

 

 

Computer Site of Abadan School of Medical Sciences has 40 zero client systems. All the classrooms that they are about 20 classes have computers, video projectors and screens. Office building, dormitory for girls and boys had Wireless internet. Broadband Internet is 10 Mg/S. This center also manages online systems.

Access to electronic journals and databases of ministry of Health is established that including Web of Science, Scopus and etc. Also, this school has an English journal entitled "Arvand Journal of Health and medical sciences".

 

Air pollution laboratory

This laboratory is equipped by sampling devices and environmental air pollutants.

 

Hydraulic laboratory

Available experiments in the laboratory include the following:: Determine the Reynolds number - overflows discharge coefficient - calculate the force of the water jet et al.

 

Environmental chemistry laboratory

Available experiments in the laboratory include: Total hardness, permanent hardness, temporary hardness, calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, alkalinity, colorimetric, Chloride, iodine, sulfate, nitrate and nitrite.

 

Environmental Microbiology laboratory

This lab equipped with Binocular microscopes, Phase contrast microscopy, Colony Counter, Autoclave, incubator and Water bath et al.

Considering the corona virus as being pandemic, Molecular Diagnosis Laboratory (Corona) was inaugurated by the order of the President of the University, Dr. Salmanzadeh, with the assistance of the Vice Chancellor of Education, Research and Technology, Dr. Mubarak, and with the participation of the Vice Chancellor, Dr. Shariati in less than 40 days at the location of the Vice Chancellor for Education, Research and Technology.

In order for the main diagnostic equipment of the laboratory, including Real Time PCR, nanodrops, microcentrifuges devices and etc., the potential of the laboratories of the Deputy of Education, Research and Technology was used, and thus the above-mentioned equipment was transferred to the Molecular Diagnosis Laboratory with the cooperation of Mr. Malaeke, the head of the laboratories. In addition, the list of defects of the equipment and consumables that have been prepared by the experts of the laboratories of the educational deputy was given to the medical equipment unit and the then technical manager of the laboratory, Dr. Kavari, in order for purchase. After eliminating the defects and preparing a safety standard, the above-mentioned laboratory was built and provided to the Deputy of Treatment and Health.

Sampling and diagnostic tests began on May 4 in two shifts in the morning and evening (and sometimes according to the need and number of samples as a night shift) with the presence of two technical personnel and two admission and response personnel.

Admission of International Medical and Paramedical Students in Abadan
After the signing of contract between Abadan university of Medical Sciences and Tehran University of Medical Sciences, the Dean AUMS announced the admission of international medical and paramedical students in Abadan.
Dr. Shokrollah Salmanzadeh stated this morning: This contract is aimed at launching an international campus and developing educational and research activities and strengthening the country's scientific authority in the world, especially in the region. This will become true by considering the successful history of TUMS as well as the unique location of the faculty of AUMS (located in the Arvand Free Zone and adjacent to Iraq country).
He stated that the duration of this contract has been determined to be 30 years and this issue it will be evaluated and reviewed once every 10 years based on pre-determined goals.
The Dean of AUMS, noted that the two sides will do their best to admit international students in the first semester of the current academic year.  In addition international students in the fields of doctor of medicine), pharmacy and dentistry; Nursing at the master's and PhD levels and at the undergraduate level in the fields of anesthesia, operating room, radiology, medical equipment, clinical nutrition, emergency and health; Will be accepted upon receipt of designated fees.

Launching the industrial safety laboratory of Abad
The Deputy Minister of Education, Research and Technology of Abadan University of Medical Sciences announced the launch of the Industrial Safety and Ergonomics Laboratory of this faculty.
 
Dr. Sara Mubarak in an interview with Webda reporter in Abadan this morning said: "Due to the necessity of the educational needs of the students of Abadan University of Medical Sciences and considering the follow-ups of the professional health group of this faculty, this laboratory was equipped and set up."
