Biotechnology has been defined as the application of living systems and organisms to develop or make products, or “any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use” (United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, Art. 2). According to American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), biotechnology is “the use of living things to make products.” Similarly, a standard definition of biotechnology was formulated in the Convention on Biological Diversity (1992) – “any technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives there of, to make or modify products and processes for specific use.” This definition was agreed by 168 member nations, and was also accepted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). As per the above-mentioned definitions, one can safely claim that medical biotechnology is applying living organisms to the diagnosis or treatment of a disease, development of vaccines, drugs, diagnostic tools, and a host of other therapeutic biotechnological products.
