Hematology Laboratory and blood banking

Laboratory hematology is a branch of medical sciences about laboratory aspects of hematologic diseases including RBC disorders, leukocyte disorders and coagulation system. Blood banking discuss about preparation, transfusion and immunohematology of blood products.

At the end of the theory and practical courses, students are expected to:

- performing, evaluating and interpretation of CBC and peripheral blood smear

- laboratory diagnosis of iron deficiency anemia, anemia of chronic disease and megaloblasic anemia

- interpretation and performing hemoglobin electrophoresis and diagnosis of hemolytic ane

- Morphologic diagnosis of alterations in leukocytes

- Interpretation of quantitative granulocytic, monocytic and lymphocytic disorders

- morphologic evaluation of Myeloprolifrative neoplasms

- morphologic evaluation of myelodysplatic syndromes

- morphologic evaluation of acute leukemia

- morphologic evaluation of lymphocyte disorders

- performing and interpretation of coagulation tests

- performing and interpretation of compatibility tests

- laboratory diagnosis of transfusion reactions

- explaining immunohematology of major and minor blood groups
